During the past several years, my appreciation for mathematics has grown and it has become an an integral part of me. University of Michigan’s department of mathematics in the school of Literature, Science, and the Arts offers many rigorous courses as well as extracurricular opportunities to support my interests. I hope to explore the different branches of mathematics, including Analysis, Topology, Algebra, among others. One topic that I am currently self-studying is real analysis using the book, “Real Mathematical Analysis”, by Charles C. Pugh. Starting with the construction of real numbers, many seemingly simple theorems require precision to prove. I enjoy finding rigorous mathematical proofs to these problems. The courses in the Honors Mathematics Sequence provide a rigorous foundation in both calculus and analysis for me to build upon. I look forward to tackling these courses which move quickly yet also cover topics with attention to the details. Some of the more advanced classes including Math 395 and 396 appear extremely challenging yet During my sophomore and junior year, I conducted …show more content…

Computer science is a way of thinking. Starting in freshman year, I learned algorithms in preparation for programming competitions. Immediately, I was hooked on the unique problems I encountered: creating programs to find the shortest distance through three-dimensional mazes or simulating the path of lasers in a labyrinth mirrors. I loved the satisfaction of successfully implementing the individual parts of a program to solve an overarching problem. Before typing away at the keyboard, I would carefully trace out several steps on paper and plan out the program -- calculating time complexities and memory requirements. After completing the code, I would anxiously push the green run button then look in the console for confirmation. A seemingly limitless number of ideas can be transformed into
