In an article written by Kiran Misner, “Paying College Athletes”, published by The Campanile in December 7, 2016, “College is a place for learning, growing as a person, trying out new experiences and meeting new people. One thing college should not be, however, is a professional work environment.” Athletes’ main priority should be their school work. While, sadly, in many cases this in not the truth, especially in higher income/division sports. Adding the element of salary on top of this will give coaches and players yet another reason to focus solely on their athletics, throwing away the education that they need. According to the NCAA, disregarding baseball, less than 2% of all college athletes will go professional. Baseball being the outlier, has around 11%. In no way am I trying to discourage someone from going pro, but I believe that with these statistics, blowing off your education is not a smart move. I can speak from experience on this topic since i will be playing softball at Northwestern in a little under a year and a half. The coaches there strongly push me to put my school work first and sport second. If a student-athlete struggles to succeed in highschool, and goes onto play at a college or university that has an education level they know may not be for them, they should not blame anyone but themselves for being overwhelmed with too much school work alongside their sport, then complaining that they “need” money.
