In 2017, the marketing behind musicians has lead singers and boyband members gathering tens of millions of social media followers, sold out tours, merchandise and fantiacal displays of devotion. According to American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, human beings are driven to act by motivating factors. In his groundbreaking theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, he represented these human desires in a pyramid of levels that range from the physiological to the psychological. The potent psychological need that the marketers behind most pop acts know well is the need for ‘Love and Belonging’. In the millennial generation, a sense of disillusionment has arisen causing a shift from traditional religious authorities to spiritual alternatives of an individual’s choice. That is to say, some people find Deepak Chopra’s spiritual advice soothing, others may crave romantic partners, some teach, others drink, while some find meaning in spirituality, ect.
