Course Competencies Since the start of ENG 101, taught by Mrs. Fox, I have learned a lot about the English language as well as writing essays. These lessons are important to understand to achieve a business degree. Writing has always been one of my strong suits, despite lacking focus and motivation to sit for hours and write, but I think that I have shown skill in college level writing. I am confident in my abilities as a writer. I know I have demonstrated an understanding of the course competencies for drafting an essay. I demonstrated course competency 1, which is to “develop an appropriate and articulate thesis in an essay using adequate support, sound reasoning, and valid evidence” (Fox 1). I had written a deeply emotional essay about the effects my father’s death had on me called, “My Father’s Death.” I had three points where I explained specifically the affect my dad’s death had on my mental health, and how I interpreted the way I felt. I wrote in order: “I don’t process grief correctly, I’m reluctant to display emotional vulnerability to others, and I’m afraid of being alone.” I wrote the thesis in chronological order with points towards my claim that death taught me previously unknown things about myself. I used the points to form the topic of each body paragraph and connected each topic sentence back to the thesis statement. I took care to use the 3T’s, which Mrs. Fox taught me in a Youtube video: “3T’s Thesis, Topic Sentences, Transition Sentences.” We learned about the 3T’s at the beginning of the semester. Mrs. Fox states in the video: “I am going to show you how to highlight the 3T’s, check your paper for the 3T’s, and make sure you have good essay organization.” I believe that of the lessons I have learned in my English classes, the most memorable for me has been writing a proper college level
