Competency Statement

Thank you for reviewing my credentials as I apply for a tenure-track faculty position in the new engineering program. I am excited to have this opportunity for the following reasons.

1. Teaching broadly within mechanical, materials, manufacturing and general engineering at the undergraduate and masters levels, has always been my career goal. Doing so in innovative ways and adopting best teaching practices has been key to this. This is why I am interested in joining a general engineering faculty recognizing the importance of working together across the university. I mention the masters level because I have always believed masters programs must include courses outside of engineering.

2. Design experiences both outside of and within courses

I want to join a faculty committed to continuous improvement. My ABET experience is detailed in my CV and Teaching Philosophy. I am most proud of developing 1) a course level assessment system, 2) an assessment system using EBI for ABET criteria 1-2, and 5-9, and 3) a program level assessment system. I see the student portfolios as key to continuous improvement. This could lead to course portfolios.

4. I love being an academic advisor. This is key to the four-year guarantee and continuous

The school had been in existence for only a year. I wanted to improve engineering education and felt the best way was to be part of something new. As a faculty member I have always thought it important to support my colleagues and the university in my dealings with students. Academic advising is key to this. VCU had one of the best fine arts programs in the country and required all students to complete a fine arts course. As an academic advisor, I encouraged and enabled students to consider the requirement an opportunity not to consider a simple “box to check”. Too many people forget that Math/Sci is part of the liberal arts. After reviewing the engineering curricula I have ideas regarding better integration of FAK requirements which I would like to
