The controversy over abortions has drastically contrasting views that divide people apart. Our nation has butted heads with each other over it. The debate over abortions has existed for a long time, but more light has been shed upon it after the 2016 presidential election. Determining your side on the debate depends on your religion and upbringing. Many religious people strongly believe that the fetus is a human life and that abortions should be banned. Others find that women should have the choice to getting an abortion because it concerns her body. This leaves the question, should the U.S. government fund clinics that provide abortions?

Funding clinics that provide abortions also helps fund other healthcare services. Planned Parenthood is the most commonly known clinic that provides abortions. They are the nation’s largest healthcare provider for men and women. Though they’re known for abortions, it only accounts for three percent of what they do. Planned Parenthood has given out 4 million tests for STDs in 2011. They also supplied 750,000 breast cancer exams and 770,000 Pap tests to test for cervical cancer. Before these tests were largely provided, cervical cancer was the leading cause of death in women (Scientific American). Many clinics that people want to stop funding actually help people in poverty get access to many services. Stopping this would result in millions of people not getting the healthcare they need, which can lead to untreated diseases or cancers.
Understanding what these clinics serve to the public can help people learn more about pregnancies and contraception. Funding abortions means that more information and education about contraception can be provided for people who don’t have access to it. There are around 220 million people in the developing world who wish they could prevent pregnancy, but lack the knowledge of effective contraception. (Singer) Many clinics have information about contraception. This can decrease the amount of unwanted pregnancies, which also decreases the amount of abortions
