In 1965 sociologist Robin Williams identified America’s top three core values as achievement and success, individualism, and hard work. These simple values are taken for granted compared to the life of an immigrant. As Americans we are given ample opportunity to fulfill and live up to our full potential. I have learned about the struggles of generations before me and the privileges I have obtained from them. Minorities in general have come a long way to develop social equality. The most indecent thing I personally have to worry about in my life, is my reaction to people's vulgarity and ignorance. Watching The Harvest I have come to the conclusion that America has found a way to legalize slavery. An average American, even a poor American wouldn't show the dedication immigrants do for a job that pays virtually nothing. They are denied liberties in life simply because they are from another country. What Zulema, Perla, and Victor go through in life is inhumane. They not only work at a young age but they work in conditions that can kill or bring harm to their bodies. Victor stated that at one point of time his skin started to burn off from the pesticides in the crops. . Every day after work he has to go home and wash his skin in bleach to get clean. Zulema risks getting cut by scissors used to harvest onions and endangers her wellbeing to pluck apples from the top of ladders. Unthinkably they do this for 12 plus hours of the day in the heat. Americans have labor laws in place to protect children. We also have organizations like OSHA to enforce safe working conditions. If you work in the United States at the bare minimum you should at least be protected by our laws and regulations. …show more content…
