Counseling Psychology One career choice within the field of psychology is in counseling psychology which can be described as either an individual as a health care provider or an individual in a general practice setting of professional or specialized psychology. A counseling psychologist focuses on how an individual functions at all ages within a relationship but also within their personal life. This aspect of psychology deals with physical health worries or concerns, societal issues, work and also emotional problems that an individual can have in various stages of his or her lifespan. In looking into the requirements, in West Virginia the requirements for having a career in counseling psychology the institution where an individual went to school must be accredited which means they must possess either a CACREP, NCATE, NCACS, SACS or CORE accreditation and for the individual to obtain a professional license they would have to have a minimum of 60 semester hours of course work at or above a graduate level and an additional 1500 to 3000 hours of supervised experience in counseling psychology (West Virginia Psychological Assocation, 2014).
