The public education system has been constantly changing over the times. It is now more than ever that society is noticing the rapidly increasing and large quantity of diversity within the classroom and how important it is for teachers to accommodate to that environment. The ability to transform a regular classroom to a comfortable learning environment is key to student achievement and teacher effectiveness. Throughout the article the author stresses the gravity of having a teacher that understands and is educated on how to effectively teach a classroom that is diverse. The magazine’s definition, to better clarify the word, of diverse or multicultural refers to culturally and linguistically diverse students, including those with and at risk for disabilities, as well as socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Teacher education programs (TEPs) ineffectiveness in incorporating cultural awareness and adjusting curriculum to contain content relatable to multicultural students. The appropriately answered the question by stating that teachers when given the opportunity to teach diverse students their attitudes “reflect an appreciation of the cultural, linguistic and social characteristics of each of their students”. Although, this maybe difficult, since most teachers will derive from a different background than the majority of their students, it is important to keep an open mind and to accurately prepare for the classroom they will be teaching. A responsive classroom is one that acknowledges the presence of the diverse students and their needs to connect them to the subject material. In order to teach other students of different cultures the teacher must first assess his/her knowledge on it. The teacher then must grow awareness and educate his/her self on the different cultures to be respectable and teach his/her student’s about it. Teaching and being culturally aware should be an ongoing act within the classroom. Consequences of of not involving a culturally responsive environment can impact the students success in later year. Statistics show that low income culturally diverse students language and readiness skills, such as complex syntax structuring. If the student does not reach grade level or exceed it by the third grade the child may be at high risk to permanently stay at a lower level reading
