Cultural Competency Simply put, the United States is a diverse country. It is common knowledge that this a country founded upon immigration. Moreover, with the advancements in transportation and the growing trends toward globalization this course is more than likely to continue – barring any radical governmental intervention. One of the most integral parts of cultural competency is the process of successfully becoming culturally competent. After synthesizing available research on the topic I have constructed four main steps in becoming culturally competent. Those include self-awareness, understanding various aspects of the culturally diverse population for whom you care for, practice evidence based medicine as it relates to culturally diverse populations and continuing education (Kodjo, 2009; Purnell, 2012). The first step includes becoming self aware of one’s own beliefs.

Everyone around you will have similarities and differences, there is a reason we are all individual people, we are all different and have something different to offer. Culture plays an important part in shaping a person’s behaviour. With these findings, one can be led to believe that there are certain differences between race and gender when it comes to success in the military. However, this study reveals that even though some races or a specific gender may do better in certain areas, other races and gender tend to find greater success in other areas.
These differences contribute to the organizations ability to be flexible, generate problem solutions, relate effectively to a wide range of clients and to providing a balanced range of services. An organization can invest in developing effective employment programs and strategies that support diversity, but unless they have created an inclusive work environment, that celebrates and builds on differences and that is productive, rewarding, enjoyable and healthy for everyone concerned, they are likely to find that diversity creates more problems than it solves. They will be unable to take advantage of the benefits of diversity and are likely to have difficulty retaining employees. Work practices that make environments safe for all have achieved cultural competence and as a result are demonstrating cultural safety. Overall, this means that the workplace if spiritually, socially and emotionally respecting and appreciating different cultures and that there is no assault, challenge or denial of any person’s identity.
