Diet and Exercise: Help your stress Stress! What is stress? According to the dictionary, one definition of stress is “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstance”. At our school, as well as in this class, we converse about stress somewhat frequently. We provide specific examples of our stress, and complain about them. However, we are alone. The results of a study conducted by teachers, counselors administrators, an eight person panel, and an approval from the National Development and Research Institutes concluded that 49 % of high school students are dealing with a great deal of stress (Leonard 11; Ossola 6). Imagine a life where you have control over your stress. Now, take that stress and just release it. Make the envision a stress free world. Imagine being relaxed, loose, and not stressed out all the time. Just stay there for a few seconds. (A few seconds later) Now open your eyes. That felt great didn’t it? YES, it did because YOU were in control of YOUR stress, and YOU were relaxed and loose. However, that is in the imaginative world. Exercise boosts endorphins, which directly lower stress levels (Bhandari 2). A problem that many high school students have is that they do not get enough exercise, which means that they are not getting reduced stress levels through exercise. As stated before, clearly students haven’t chosen the healthiest of snack foods, and not exercising in addition to that, is a problem if they are looking to reduce stress levels. In fact, more than 90% of high school students do not get enough exercise (Norton 1). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), students should have a minimum of 1 hour of exercise in a day for at least 3 days a week (“How Much Physical Activity Do Children Need?”). Since 90% of students are not getting the recommended amount of exercise, they are not boosting endorphins and not lowering stress levels. But, that can all change!
