In public schools human capital is very important in organizational performance. A huge proportion of the district’s budget is spent on staff salaries and benefits. Schools performance is heavily influenced by staff who interact with the students daily. School budgets are not large enough to cater for the human capital requirements.
The time spent at Western Governors University (WGU) has been a great opportunity to learn about myself, my goals, and understand the factors that influence my career choice and my success. When I began at WGU four years ago, I did not have any experience in human resource management beyond recruiting, hiring and training for the restaurant industry. In the beginning, I was uncomfortable with the limited knowledge. Yet, as time progressed, my confidence, knowledge and skills increased with each course.

I have developed an understanding of the business structure and what the hierarchy of employees actually is. A visual representation will be used to show the levels of employment at Romeos Foodland. One resource that most organizations overlook and neglect to capitalize on is its human capital. Human capital is the abilities and aptitudes, which an employee gains on the job, through both training and experience, which increases their worth within their organization. (What, 2016) Whole Foods is successful because they invest heavily in their human capital; thusly, it is their human capital that is their source for competitive advantage. Whole Foods invests both time and resources carefully selecting individuals that possess the rare skills and talents for a specific product area.
Whole Foods develops their social and human capital in different ways, but both concentrating on the stakeholders that can make or break their organization. Human capital shows that the employee has potential based on their creativity, skills, knowledge and personality to perform the functions of the job to increase the economic value of the company. John Mackey builds human capital through the hiring process and the investment that they input into employee training. Mackey believes that for the company to be successful, that they must hire the right employees and make sure that they have adequate training for their jobs.
“Human capital measures the economic value of an employee’s skill set. It can be defined as “the skills, knowledge, and experience possessed by an individual or population, viewed in terms of their value or cost to an organization or country” (Hasan, 2017). Whole Food is building Human Capital by not focusing on increasing profits, they are focused on making sure all their employees are treated equally and skillful trained. Social capital is created between the family and wider society. Economic capital is wealth that can be inherited or created between the individual and the economy. Symbolic capital is expressed through personal qualities. (Bourdieu, 1985 cited in Reay, D., 2000). One form of capital can be linked into another such as, economical capital can be converted into cultural capital and cultural capital can be linked into social capital.
Human capital refers to growing the economy through education (Spring, 2014), and this is the basis for the founding of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College (OCTC) located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. OCTC’s (2015) mission statement fosters economic development for the region, and the economy is the driving force for the curricula offered at the College. Also, the College’s prescribed measures of success are enrollment, number of graduates, job placement, and the retention rate (SC Technical College System, 2015). As an instructor of introductory science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, retention is the primary indicator of my success. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2016), the retention rate for OCTC is only 34%.
