Since its founding in 1939, Dollar General has become an integral part of many small towns and cities spanning across the United States. Together the affordability, accessibility, and an expanse of products makes the 14,000 Dollar General stores an easy stop for many, if not all, products a family needs. From the beginning, a small general store operated by Cal and J.L. Turner in Springfield, Kentucky operated focusing on friendly customer service, affordability, and hard work, aspects that are still held in great respect for the modern corporation (DG History). Its locations have always been more convenient than that of WalMart and Target. Therefore, I remember many times going into Dollar General for toys, snacks, and household products. Recently, a location has opened less than a quarter of a mile from my house. So, I make many stops when I am thirsty, running late for class, or need some supplies for my house. I have had the pleasure of seeing the store through every season, from Christmas to Summer. They are strongly oriented on the needs of their neighborhood. For instance, the Dollar General not too far from my home includes about a quarter of their staff as bilingual. As an area heavily dominated by Hispanic families who speak exclusively Spanish, these employees offer assistance and translation for these individuals with language barriers.
