Throughout President Donald Trump's candidacy and presidency he has targeted immigrants as being the cause of problems in the United States. In Trumps 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference speech, he covered major topics in today's news. A major part of the speech was Trump's opinion on Immigration and changes he would like to see in America concerning it. In the speech he is very open about sharing his opinion of immigrants and does not hold back while verbally attacking them. He provides a solution to his problem that he would like to see take effect, the merit system to only let in skilled immigrants. He refers to them as criminals and rapists. In his 2018 CPAC speech Trump refers to an innocent that accord in 2017 were a terrorist drove down the West Side Highway in New York City, hitting pedestrians with the goal of proving that immigrants are criminals. Trump states in his CPAC speech, "I don't want people who drive a car at 100 miles an hour down the west side highway, and kill eight innocent victims and destroy the lives of 14 more." Trump is insisting all Immigrants are bad and their goal is to hurt Americans. Trump is also famous for sharing his harsh on social media, tweeting what he is thinking. Trump tweeted in 2015, "I love the Mexican people, but Mexico is not our friend. They're killing us at the border and they're killing us on jobs and trade. FIGHT!" He turns to social media to share his opinion and get his point across to his over 49.4 million followers on twitter. Americans today tend to believe in Trumps opinion of Immigrants when in reality America was created by immigrants. In the beginning of Trumps speech he mentions protecting the heritage, culture, and freedom of the US. Nearly half of the United States population can trace its roots back to Elis Island, where people of different races and cultures came together for a better life, the American Dream. Trumps family was a part of this dream. Not only was Trumps ancestor's immigrants but most of this staff's ancestors can through Elis Island. In a Washington Post article 'Under Trump's new immigrant rule, his own grandfather likely wouldn't have gotten in' the author Philip Bump states, "Kellyanne Conway's great-grandfather was named Pasquale Lombardo and was born in Naples, Italy." "Stephen K. Bannon's great-great-grandfather was a man named Mattias Herr, who was born in Bavaria in 1836 before moving to Maryland." This article shows that if his rules were in place in the past his grandfather would not have been a loud in America along with his Counselor to the President's great-grandfather and former White House Chief Strategist's great great grandfather.
