Abstract
Non-Profit organizations are spread across the United States with several different missions however have the same end goal, to serve the community. The Drucker Foundation Self-Assessment Tool focuses on what the mission is and why is it important to what the organization would like to achieve, the strategies and performance of the organizations, and the what the client expects from the organization. These things are important to the overall goal of the non-profit organization. For the organization, the effectiveness will essentially mean delivering results on issues it finds important. An effective nonprofit is clear about its purpose and its mission; what it would like to accomplish and why it is so important. The mission of the organization must be clear to the board, staff, partners, donors, stakeholders, volunteers, and the community. It is essential that everyone involved plays a role in working towards a common goal. The programs and services should be aligned to further develop the mission while explaining the value they add. In a for-profit company, if you own the company, you own the assets, which means you get to keep the profits. In a for-profit company, controlling decisions are made by the shareholders or partners and that control is an expression of ownership. There are three reasons why there is no ownership in non-profits. The first reason is, in a public charity shared governance is required by law. The board of directors makes up a diverse group of people to share that responsibility. The second reason is by following best practice concepts, which dictates that the control of the organization are with people who can plan for success. The third and final reason is no single person should have control because this provides the necessary checks and balances that prevent unfair benefit to insiders. In a non-profit organization, control lies with board of the directors so there are no shareholders and no profits to distribute. All the board of directors share responsibility and accountability for the financial matters. The organization is somewhat a public trust, the board acts as the safeguard of the public’s interest in the charity and its
