The current approach to drunk driving is not working

Imagine your best friend, hospitalized for life due to a single poor choice and a few too many drinks.Throughout New Zealand, far to many people are left scarred with the death or injury of a friend or a loved one as a result of drunk driving. The following points go into depth about the current limit of drunk driving and why it should be lowered, Why the punishment for being caught driving while intoxicated should be increased, and why people should be further educated about the risks and consequences of drunk driving from an earlier age.

Over 500 people in New Zealand were seriously injured last year alone. Could you be another statistic? Or because of you, could it be someone else instead? The current punishment for being caught is 50 demerits and a $200 fine which is a low price to pay when, potentially, you're risking your own and others safety. A new punishment should be put in place to dissuade people from driving under the influence. If caught driving with up to 0.04% BAC than a $250 fine and 50 demerits penalty and up to 24 hr jail time is enforced. If found over that, then jail time up to a week, gaining 75 demerits, and losing their license for 6 months should be the punishment. For people caught reoffending a 100 demerit penalty and loss of license for a further year should be the punishment. With harsher consequences in place, people are less likely to drive intoxicated in the knowledge of potential
