The Story of Early Islam: Exploring the Narrative of "Sacred Space" The emergence and spread of Islam in the 7th century AD marked a major turning point in the religious, political, and social landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. Central to early Islamic history was the concept of "sacred space," which played a key role in the establishment, function, and encryption of the faith. This essay analyzes early Islamic history through the lens of Brereton’s categories, examining how sacred spaces were formed, functioned, and coded. The establishment of sacred spaces in early Islam can be traced to the migration of Prophet Muhammad, known as the Hijra, from Mecca to Medina. Formerly known as Yathrib, Medina has been transformed into a holy city and the center of a burgeoning Muslim community. This change was symbolized by the establishment of the first mosque in Medina, known as the Prophet's Mosque or Masjid al-Nabawi.
