Edgar Allen Poe was one of the most important writers in the world during his time. According to Giordano, Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1789 in Boston, Massachusetts (Giordano) . He was born to David and Elizabeth Poe and had two other siblings. However, when Poe was very young, he suffered a tragedy. His mother, Elizabeth, passed away and at the time she and her husband had divorced. Also, Poe and his siblings had been split up at the time of their mother’s death which made it even tougher. These two events would be very important to Poe’s writing later on in his life. Edgar Allen Poe had many ups and downs during his lifetime, but he still became a great writer. When Poe was a young man, he wanted to go to West Point because he wanted to be in the army. However, it took him a year to get into the school because he had to have his application approved. Edgar got a job as an editor for a newspaper company through a contest he won. Thanks to his work “The Manuscript Found in a Bottle” he got his first job as a newspaper editor in New York City. Then, in 1836, Edgar married his cousin Virginia Clemm and at the time he was thirteen years older than her. Unfortunately, she died just 11 years later after her health continued to decline. After Virginia’s death, Edgar continued to gain success as a writer and poet and in 1840 he published his first detective story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. In 1843, after being unemployed for a year, Edgar struck success from his story “The Gold Bug” and gained a lot of attention. He followed that up by writing his most famous work “The Raven” which was published in 1845. According to Giordano, on October 7, 1849 Poe mysteriously passed away (Giordano). There are several theories to how he died, but none of them have been proven
