A few days before graduating high school my English teacher wrote me the following note. “Matthew, you are a leader whether you like it or not. I know you are uncomfortable with this role at times and overwhelmed. However, being a leader also means being able to say no. As my mother told me when I was young no is another way saying I care about you and myself. Remember where your feet are located that is where you are suppose to be. If you weren’t there you would be elsewhere. You might not realize it now or in twenty years, but there are lesson to be learned. Stay in the moment it’s the only thing you can control. Understanding the lives of your students guides educators in creating lesson plans that correlate with their life’s experiences. As educators, we view our students as our own children. Notwithstanding, as an educator the line between student and something else requires vigilant observance. Despite our emotions about a student, it is crucial to make decisions based on what is best for kids. Without a sense of trust structure, safety and compassion can not thrive. Schools can grow in a positive or negative direction based on the actions of the staff. When the teachers, administrators and support staff actively participate in their school a culture of learning flourishes. When problems arise, the school effectively and efficiently handles the impediment. An administration's ability to unflinching courage to address problems and seek guidance from its staff establishes a culture of trust.
