My classroom will be student-centered, I will set this tone by having the class mutually agree upon the classroom rules and set consequences they can understand and easily follow. The rules will be few and tailored to the needs of the students. I will set clear expectations for the class and be a role model.
Throughout my years of school, I have experienced a multitude of teaching styles and classroom atmospheres. While I don’t plan to become a teacher myself, I still value education and recognize the importance of creating safe and effective classroom environments. While there are many different ways to accomplish this, I believe there are certain values that need to be focused on in order to achieve it to the highest degree. Education should value independence, self-esteem, emotional needs, intellect, and more; however, the best way to educate is to ensure basic needs are met and foster the potential of students. The role of teachers in the classroom should be relative.
Being involved in the learning process of others is vitally important to me. I believe that as an educator, we have the capability and responsibility to help mold not only students educational goals, but to help mold them into successful adults that sill contribute to society. Many times during my life I have been a teacher, a counselor, a cheerleader and a role model for my students. Every student is at a different point in their learning process and cycle, and a good educator can find that point and capitalize on what the student needs next.
I absolutely love being an educator. With twenty-one years of teaching experience, I can think of no profession that is more rewarding. This manifests itself in my teaching with a warm, safe and loving learning environment. I have always held myself accountable for creating a love of school and a love of learning within my students.
I want students to be able to learn and appreciate the complexity which is our nervous system. I want to foster a passion for all things neuroscience. I want students to conduct research in neuroscience so they can focus on one area and have top universities see their research. Research that they were able to accomplish at a high school without high tech labs or vast resources. I want students to get to places that I could never imagine.
One of the most important aspects of being an outstanding educator is developing a positive rapport with students, colleagues, and parents or caregivers. Developing a positive rapport with students can be accomplished when the educator treats his or her (her will be used hereon for the sake of simplicity) students with a high level of respect, is honest, reliable, and a great role model. Most students develop an increased self-esteem and have a higher level of trust and desire to be successful when treated fairly and respectfully. The student is more likely to be respectful towards the teacher and to develop a great rapport with that teacher. Developing a positive relationship with colleagues is easily accomplished when an educator is a supportive team player, flexible, open to constructive criticism, and strives to be her best through open communication and collaboration with other staff members.
My Philosophy Statement on Adult Education Adult Education is key to a lot of successful individuals in the world. There are many individuals that go to college in order to get in a career. Education is important, because it allows students to grow into professional individuals for the workforce. When I am at my internship at Morgan State University I realized how impactful it is to help students. The reason why I wanted to study Adult Education was to help individuals become leaders of the world, since I was once was an undergraduate college student.
I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating classroom in which they grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator it is my personal goal to help each and every child that enters my classroom to meet that goal. I plan on doing this my creating a safe, idea sharing, active, and fun classroom environment. In order to create this type of classroom I will act as guide for students. When students enter the classroom, we create our own community of a variety individuals.
Classroom discipline is important when attempting to develop a positive learning environment. All grade levels can benefit from having guidelines within the classroom that help manage the classroom. The four strategies described in this chapter are divided students into base groups. These groups provide and teamwork atmosphere that promotes leadership and responsibility.
Students know what to expect every day when they enter the classroom. They also know the standards you hold them to. In my future classroom, to the best of my ability to remain constant with my students. I want students to feel comfortable, valued, and important.
Oh…. I REALLY wanted to be teacher… I wanted to be an educator, until I was about ten years old; that’s really all I could ever talk about. As a youth coming of of Flatbush Brooklyn, I realize that sometimes a mentor is all a child needs. At this stage of my life, part of me felt that my family and my teachers were the only people that truly cared about my well being.
Teaching philosophy is described by Sadker and Sadker as, “Behind every school and every teacher is a set of related beliefs - a philosophy of education – that influences what and how students are taught. A philosophy of education represents answers to questions about the purpose of schooling, a teacher’s role and what should be taught and by what methods.” (Teacher, Schools and Society. 2005). With this definition in consideration, my teaching philosophy is “I believe that children learn best when they are given the chance to choose, discuss and explore what they want to learn, when they want to learn and how they want to learn.
