Community service is the process of doing an act for someone else, and it is not for a reward. It is simply to help others. Emma Thurman’s idea of community service is, “It gives kids an education of how to care for others and the place they live.” According to Mrs. Havens, 7th grade counselor, “It helps boost your self-esteem because doing things for other people makes us feel better. You learn something. Meaning, anything you volunteer for, you’re going to learn something.” For instance, if you volunteer at the animal shelter, you will learn a lot about how to take care of animals. If you sign up at a concession stand, maybe it will give you good experience to wait tables or run a restaurant someday. Some students have gone beyond purchasing items. Instead, they donate their time. Some students have taken up the charge of going to homeless shelters and serving food around the holidays. Others have gone to assisted living homes and have read to the residents there.
One easy way to earn community service this year is to bring in pop tabs. The pop tabs will be used for the Ronald McDonald House competition. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families, whose children are receiving life-saving treatment at Indianapolis area hospitals, can stay at for very low costs. Mrs. Havens said at the first Trojan Times meeting, “These families watch their children fight against cancer and other diseases. The goal is to embrace all families regardless of their incomes. No family is turned away.” The pop tabs are the little tabs on your soda cans and also soup cans; they are collected and recycled. In turn, the Ronald McDonald House gets the money it needs for the houses to pay for electricity and comfort for the families.
