My moment of epiphany came when I started working for Upstate Medical University’s Student Affair Department in their Student Success Center as an Office Manager. The Student Success Center specializes in education for underrepresented medical students. As an Office Manager, I have the pleasure with working with the medical students and upper faculty members. I have developed a camaraderie with a number of medical students. Many of the medical students come to me to vent about challenges or obstacles that they have to encounter and/or hurdles they need to overcome. My provision toward my medical students doesn’t have anything to do with my office management duties. I’ve worked at Syracuse Housing Authority an Educational Coordinator, at its TAP program. Acronyms for Tenant Assistant Program. I was assigned to teenagers and young adults age 13 to 27 years old. It was the most strenuous but rewarding jobs to help individuals be self-efficient in education, parenting and finding a job. My team of three worked diligently to put these individuals on the path of hope and new endeavors. Our center function as a sanctuary for many young men who weren’t built for the streets. Most young men of color, wanted an outlet that provided encouragement and educational support. My TAP students have praised me for incorporating new programs like tutoring, education, and job training. One of my successful programs was networking with the College of Environmental Science and Forestry ESF “Teach One and Be One.” It was a program that involved privileged college students to volunteered his or her time to tutor one of our under privileged student. The privilege student was providing the necessary tools necessary to be one of them (A college student) in the future. That program was successful. TAP was able to help 13 to 15 students enter into college, just because they had the chance to be taught and encouraged by college level students. On Tuesday’s we had group discussions called “Think Tuesday” It was a deep dialogue about living in a impoverish areas and not having the necessary tools to get out. On Wednesday’s I created a list of words called Wacky Word Wednesday, where I taught SAT
