As per Galanti, cultural competence is a continuous learning process. There is no end point of it. Cultural competence training is imperative for the nurses, to provide high-quality care to the patients. To enhance my cultural competency, I attend the online classes on cultural competence provided by my employer in order to enhance my knowledge and skills, as well as fulfill my continuing education requirement. I demonstrate my professional development by applying the knowledge I gained from the classes and my everyday experience during patient care. I learn new things every time I meet people from different ethnicity, or cultural background, than my own. I try not to stereotype people, I rather generalize them, because people from the same culture may have different viewpoints. Generalization helps me to learn more about the unique values, beliefs and practices of each patient. To enhance the cultural competence of the nursing staff in my unit we can use the self-assessment checklist and identify our own communication style, values, beliefs and attitudes. We need to be sensitive about the communication style. Which includes, formal vs informal language, tone of voice, directive vs non-directive approaches, personalismo, way of asking question about their culture and religion etc. Time orientation is another factor that vary from culture to culture and can cause confusion for healthcare personnel. I will put focus on teaching my colleagues on how to ask the culturally sensitive question which is the 4 C’s of culture: i) What do you Call your problem? ii) What do you think caused your problem? iii) What have you done to cope with your problem? iv) What concerns do you have about your problem?
