When working in the healthcare profession it is essential for healthcare workers to have excellent communication skills. Competent communication skills ensure that the patient’s needs are meet in an effective and timely manner. In this particular scenario the nurse suspects the patient Mr Gee is having a reaction to the suspected traditional chinese medicine drinks his family are administering him, Mr Gee is also sitting by the window crying to himself. In this paper we will be discussing two potential issues for the nurse, in relation to communication with Mr Gee and the rationale as to why these are important.

An issue that needs to be identified by the nurse prior to communicating with Mr Gee is the language barrier. When there is a difference in language between the patient and nurse, the chance of miscommunication is increased. Without being self-aware and acknowledging one's cultural identity as a nurse can significantly impact on the ability to communication effectively with the patient. In this scenario, if the nurse does not identify the potential issue of cultural differences, and refuses to invest the time into understanding the individuals this can hinder one's ability to develop a rapport connection (hbiiuihi). For the nurse to recognise this is a potential issue by putting time into understanding the cultural identity of Mr Gee and his family, this will demonstrate his/her respect and effort to understand their culture. This is important for nurses to carry out, because it enhances their understanding of the patient's cultural identity thus allowing them to fulfill the needs of the patient in a culturally safe and respectful
