Introduction

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic disease where the pancreas creates insulin but the body’s tissue is resistant to the insulin due to a layer of fat that is covering the organs and muscles, making it harder for to insulin to reach the bloodstream. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and affects 85-90% of all people with the disease. It is mainly due to lifestyle issues, such as bad eating and exercise habits, but also has a genetic factor. Type 2 Diabetes is becoming more common with over 200 people in Australia being diagnosed everyday. The indigenous members of the community are more at risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes since the introduction of the ‘westernised’ lifestyle, as their bodies are adapted to a natural diet and high amounts of physical activity.

Symptoms

Type 2 Diabetes sometimes doesn’t show very many or no symptoms at all and many people often discard the symptoms as ‘just getting older’. This can be very bad for the person as they will not seek professional help and then the effects of Type 2 Diabetes may become fatal.

If a parent has a rare form of Type 2 Diabetes called Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), the child’s risk will be 1 in 2. Some scientist believe that if the mother has Type 2 Diabetes then the child’s risk would be increased more than if the father had Type 2 Diabetes. If both parents have Type 2 Diabetes the child will have a 1 in 2 chance of developing the disease. It’s not only the genetics that will pass on Type 2 Diabetes but also that the child may develop bad excise and eating habits that may contribute to developing Type 2
