Imagine a college freshman athlete making no money and going to class every day like a regular student. The next month they are drafted into the NBA and making millions of dollars. All of this happening without a college degree. They play a few weeks in the NBA and have a career ending injury. What happens next? They need to find a job to help pay for all of the luxurious items they just purchased. It is going to be very hard to find a good paying job with just a high school diploma. Education is one of the most important attributes in life. Every year there are young NCAA men's basketball players that leave college early to take on the professional side of sports and enter the NBA draft. 76% of those student athletes said in a survey they think that it is likely they’ll be in the NBA eventually (NCAA research, 2013, para. 3). If those big time plans of going pro don’t happen, how are they going to make money? They don’t have a degree because they stopped going to school after only one short year. They could flip burgers or mop floors for sure. Even if they do make it pro what happens if they are done after only one year in the big league? They wouldn’t have made enough money to live on for the rest of their life. That’s why getting that degree in college is so important. Instead of doing one year of school and being done, stay for a few more and get something out of schooling. If you have the opportunity to be a one and done it is likely that your school is already being payed for so why not take advantage of that. While they are in college and playing that sport expecting to go pro it is probably hard to think of doing anything else with their life. Thinking of a plan for your life after sports is probably something many young adults don’t think of but definitely
