I’m currently working on an essay and have included two of the three rhetorical appeals Logos and Ethos. The main appeal is Logos, because There is a lot of information and facts. Ethos also, because there is authority that will help back up the claims. My audience is not directed to any individual group it is intended for everyone.

In the article "Life Isn't Fair - Deal With It", the author, Mike Myatt, claims that "life is not fair, nor do I believe we should attempt to socially or financially engineer it to be such" (Myatt 2011). He supports this claim in the article by using a plethora of persuasive techniques and real-life examples. Using ethos and logos to convince the reader of his point has a strong effect on this opinion piece; by being logical and credible, he creates an environment of an authority figure, making it seem that the author knows more than you; therefore, trusting them comes naturally. For example, when the author is talking about "The following 11 points came from a commencement speech widely attributed to Bill Gates entitled Rules for Life" (Myatt 2011), one becomes convinced that the author knows what he is talking about; by using Bill Gates, a famous entrepreneur, and billionaire, as an example to prove his point valid, Myatt creates trust and reliability, establishing ethos.
In my essay, I was able to use pathos, ethos, and logos effectively to interpret the ideas of power and how it affects one’s personal life. I used the technique of logos, by taking the information of Julius Caesar, Abraham Lincoln, and Adolf Hitler as evidence so I could have accurate conclusions. Also with the evidence and the leaders I mentioned in my essay, I stated Ethos, because it related to the idea that my ideas were credible based on my evidence. Ethos was also stated in the in-text citations and quotes, helping to make my essay credible that I got the information from a worthy source. I appealed to emotion with the technique of pathos, by creating sympathy for Brutus’s wife in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.

As such having a good mix of these proves important on how your paper or article gets interpreted by the public, as such this information provides readers important knowledge so we as a reader can make proper judgement on the paper. Useem uses strongly three main approaches in his writing to help boost its legitimacy. Starting with the idea of how online retailers are abusing us, Useem seems to bring forward the information he has found to help us understand the issues at hand. Information needs to be supported with facts, which leads to a significant use of logos in his work to back up his claims.

Ethos is when the author is a credible source for the writing. An example is in the first paragraph when it says (She delivered the speech "A Latina Judges View"). This one sentence shows that she is the only one giving the speech. Since Sonia is a Latina herself, she knows all the struggles she has to overcome.
Ethos is “the character and credibility of the writer in the eyes of the reader.” An example of this is, “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions..”. The author shows their credibility by stating they are representatives of the United States of America. The authors also portrayed this by, “In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms.”
We all know the three main aspects of argument: logos, ethos, and pathos. I would list the definitions, but let’s be honest, that’s boring. So let’s think of ethos as our moms, pathos as the emotional teens, and logos as a book. Moms and the emotional teen go together, we’ve all been there. That emotional teen can persuade you to do things you never expected, like peer pressure.
