Effective Communication Strategy in Healthcare
Communication refers to the process of information sharing which is achieved through the exchange of both nonverbal and verbal messages. In the healthcare environment, communication is integral to the relationship between healthcare providers and patients and between the healthcare providers themselves (Stiggelbout, et al., 2012). However, maintaining effective communication within the healthcare environment is difficult since the staff are frequently stressed and patients are vulnerable. Two communication strategies described below are helpful in maintaining effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients and between the healthcare professionals in the healthcare environment.
1. Active Listening
Whenever an individual, whether a patient or a health care professional, presents his or her issues, they should be listened to attentively. They should not be interrupted when they talk unless it is necessary and they should be shown empathy.

Though these agents are administered for therapeutic purposes, they react differently for various patients. For some patients, particular pharmacological agents, may present a life-threatening risk. Maintaining the safety of patients with regards to pharmacological agents is the role of the healthcare providers (Stiggelbout et al., 2012). The health care providers should assess the risk posed to a patient by a pharmacological agent before its prescription. The two communication strategies provide room for effective communication between the healthcare provider and the patient, which facilitates a comprehensive assessment of risks posed by pharmacological agents. This increases the safety of the patient as the care provider will be aware of the risks and take the necessary measures to keep them
