As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).

As our final assignment for cornerstone we were tasked with revising our rhetorical analysis. I received a B, 81%, and by the end of my revisions have “A” quality work. During recent assignments and papers for other classes I realized the thesis was one of the first few sentences in the paper. As I was reading my paper I noticed that the purpose of the author writing this wasn 't until almost halfway into the first paragraph.

Plagiarism is defined as the act of representing the work of someone else as your own (AERA, 2011; APA, 2010; APA, 2012; Cozby & Bates, 2012; Creswell, 2014). According to Fisher & Partin (2014), there are two forms of plagiarism, which are deliberate and accidental. Deliberate plagiarism is the intentional attempt to pass off the work of someone else as your own, and accidental plagiarism is unknowingly using the work of someone else without proper citation and referencing (Fisher & Partin, 2014). Commonly, plagiarism is thought of as submitting someone else’s work for an essay or school report and can include submitting the entire artifact as your own, or using a small portion of the work, such as paragraph or sentence without properly citing the original author (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Submitting someone else’s work in place of completing the work themselves is an ethical dilemma most students understand; however, oftentimes, students do not understand that it is equally important to cite the ideas of others even when expressed in their own words.
1) I could not find a Thesis. Throughout the essay, he talks about how college-level writers can most times be boring and repetitive when it comes to their essays. 2) He says the first step is to write down the argument that comes to mind, but to not use it, because that’s probably what everyone else is going to write about. 3) He recommends avoiding obvious content, taking the less usual side and to always write everything as vigorously as possible.
In any school you have attended, plagiarism is a situation that a writer should not put themselves in under any circumstances. When reading the essay “Something Borrowed,” Malcolm Gladwell gave insight into the flaws of plagiarism that writers may not have thought about before. The first being that plagiarism is never acceptable (927). The second issue with plagiarism is recognizing the differences that can or cannot “inhibit creativity” (931). Being inspired by another person's work can help and guide you to build your own ideas, but simply taking their work and claiming it as yours is not permitted.
While reading there are various ways to gain a deeper understanding of the text. For example, one method a reader can apply to increase their understanding is rhetorical reading defined as “involves more than ‘agreeing’ or ‘disagreeing’” (Heasley et al. 89). Thus, requiring the reader to focus on the text and pay close attention to the rhetorical situation to comprehend how an argument is working. In detail, the rhetorical situation consists of the writer, reader, text/purpose, and context.
While creating my rhetorical analysis paper I used all of my typical writing processes. I began this assignment by selecting a commercial that I thought would be the most appealing in the superbowl. After selecting my commercial I did some research at the library using EBSCOhost. I then created an outline on what my paper would be about and pieced all of its parts together. In the future I will try to recieve help earlier on because at first I struggled to understand what the purpose of the paper was.
Critical Reflection and Analysis Co-working a case through conducting direct work with an eight-year old girl, I used professional curiosity to explore an alarming self-disclosure made to me about her sleeping with a fifteen-year old boy, who was a non-relative. By keeping an open mind, avoiding making assumptions, analysing what was said and observing the child’s body language, I determined that whilst this incident was really inappropriate, there was nothing untoward happening. However, to safeguard and minimise risk for the child, I relayed this information to the relevant social worker so the concern could be properly addressed and resolved. Perfectionist: Although it can be a great thing that I pay attention to detail and spend time on everything until I am happy with it, I tend to wear myself a little thin because I have such high expectations of myself. Closed Off: I tend to bottle up my emotions a lot of the time and this is very unhealthy. It causes more stress and emotional damage than if I were to talk about my feelings more.
People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences.
Video Demonstration Critical Analysis It is important in professional and personal relationships to be able to communicate effectively, and this can mean a wide variety of things. Communication competence is the ability to achieve communication goals in a way that is enhancing the relationship (competence reading). Many skills and approaches can be used in conversation to show communication competence. Being flexible in communication is important, as there is no perfect way to communicate (class notes). A person who is flexible when communicating will be able to find the most effective way to communicate with each of the different people around them (competence reading).
1. Philosophical analysis is an essential tool for the improvement of our critical thinking skills. The world have introduced to us different ideas about life, death and the existence of God, and thinking about these concepts could sometimes be really confusing. The only effective way to analyze these kinds of concepts is through critical thinking, breaking down the broad and big questions into smaller and more specific questions to understand them better.
