Humans need access to shelter to survive. Unfortunately, many do not have access to this luxury. The U.S. Census reports that around 653,100 people have experienced homelessness in 2023. However, this is a lower estimate than activists have found. Still, the fact is, there are too many homeless people in America.
1. Refersal services for the homeless a. What is provided, where, when and how, etc (basic summary) b. There is a pre-orientation for homeless individuals a few times a month in order to alert them of the different housing services provided when they get out of jail. This orientation is done on each of the different floors of Horizon. Mrs. Takenya Flowers goes in and gives a short lecture along with a packet of information and forms to fill out for the inmates. In the different facilities, referral services are provided and inmates are made aware of what they can enter.
One of the biggest issues facing this great nations citizens and even some of our war hero veterans, is that of being homeless. As well as residing in poor income housing and very poor conditions. With the number of homes and land available throughout the country, and the majority of it being owned by private interest and banks is an outrage. If we do not deal with homelessness and poverty, we may end up like Detroit, Michigan.
For this reason most cities have set up policies to encourage increment of bed capacity especially periods when the demand is high. The prevalence of homelessness in California seems to be increasing by the day as a result of several reasons, which were explored. To some level it is believed that homelessness does not just occur overnight, rather some people become homeless as a result of a short life crisis that befell them and not as their chosen way of life. Of the total number of homeless, some exhibited characters that were severely mentally disabled.
Homelessness is a social issue that can be found in any big city, any country, any continent, it is a world issue and it affects us all. In the United States alone there was more than 564,000 people experiencing homelessness that is almost 0.18% of America. 83,170 individuals, or 15% of the homeless population, are considered “chronically homeless”. Chronic homelessness is an individual who has a disability and has been homelessness for a year or more. Families with a minimum of one adult member who meets that criteria are also considered chronically homeless.
According to the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, 610,042 people were homeless on a given night. About 387,845 of these people were individuals without a home. Nearly one quarter of all homeless people were children under the age of 18. These numbers are staggering. However, these numbers are actually an improvement from previous years.

In our fast growing economy, especially in California, homelessness proves to be an ever growing problem. According to the U.S Interagency Council on Homelessness, in California, the total homeless people on a given night is 134,278. With the numbers broken down into groups, the largest group consist of people that chronically experience homelessness; the number totals to 37,360. Additionally, the second largest group is unaccompanied young adults; there are 15,458 homeless young adults on a given night (Total People Experiencing). Of course, there is still a stigma on homelessness because of the harmful rhetoric used to describe the homeless population.
The social issue that I picked is homelessness. Homelessness is a real issue, even if we don’t always see it. Homelessness doesn’t just mean you don’t have a roof over your head, it means you don’t have food, a good education, a healthy lifestyle, or a warm place to sleep every night. Some people don’t think very highly about homeless people, they think that it's their fault that they are where they are in life. Homelessness is going to end up becoming a bigger problem.
On an average night in Los Angeles, California 44,359 people will sleep on the streets and in shelters. Homelessness is described as having no home or permanent place of residence, and is a growing issue today in The United States as well as worldwide. In Los Angeles, California 41,174 people are homeless , two years ago only 35,524 people were without homes , an increase of sixteen percent. Homelessness rates have skyrocketed, especially those of minors. Children under the age of eighteen are at the highest risk for displacement, surpassing veterans and the disabled.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
