There are many in which of one can build and maintain an effective relationship with children, young people and adults. One of the first ways in which a relationship can be built is knowing the names of children that you work with. This is fundamental when establishing a relationship with a child. Learning the name of a child shows them that you know who they are, consistently forgetting a child’s name could be perceived to be disrespectful and could leave the student feeling isolated and unwanted. A further way of establishing a positive relationship could be through exchanging pleasantries. This could be achieved by simply greeting students and adults. Simply greeting an individual with a smile or saying, â€oegood morning― helps to maintain your image as an approachable, kind member of staff who makes the time to converse with a student. Through this simple conversation you are presenting yourself as a person of good manners, a person who celebrates a child’s differences (extra-curricular activities) and maintaining regular contact with that student- allowing yourself and them the opportunity to learn new things about one and other and therefore reducing possible conflict. Conversing with pupils in this way would hopefully ensure that the student would feel comfortable in sharing with you a problem that they have. Solving this problem would further help to maintain the positive teaching assistant-student relationship. However, you should maintain a ‘member of staff’ within this relationship and be consistent with all pupils ensuring that a line between professionalism and friendship is upheld. It is important for a member of staff to act as a role model for that student. This will enable them to understand what is expected of them so that they can become a valued member of
