There are many qualities that good leaders must possess in order to be able to maintain a group united and working together, whether it is a sports or any academic team or club. For example; football/volleyball, U.I.L/ National Honor Society, or even Spanish/Interact club. Leaders must be willing to pass on a positive influence and know when to take charge. Being a leader involves many different characteristics. A leader must set the example for all others in the group, because if they are to show up late to practice, there isn’t a reason that any of the other members should not do the same. A leader must take risks for the benefit of the group as well as make sacrifices for it. Becoming the leader of the group requires for them to be the most dedicated. They must work harder and not be afraid to lead the group.
The Seven Habits Profile gives individuals such as myself a strong understanding on leadership strengths and weaknesses. The profile asks a series of questions and takes your scores to break down your Seven Habit effectiveness. There are 9 areas of focus; two foundational habits and seven habits. Each of the categories is scored on a scale that has a range of 3-18, with 3 being the lowest and 18 being the highest. The Seven Habits Profile showed that I am “outstanding” in 4 categories and “very good” in 5.
I scored an 87 on the leadership scorecard. According to Manning & Curtis (2012), this is an indication that I understand and employ basic principles of effective leadership and that my employees should be generally happy under my leadership and their quality of work should generally be of high standard (P. 190). This questionnaire was definitely an eye opener for me. As I read the questions and provided my answers, I recognized several areas where I immediately knew I needed to make some drastic improvements.
But first, you should have clarity of your own identity and knowledge. Once you have your own foundation with being a leader, I think that as a leader you can transition and understand the behavior of others that may be on your team. When acknowledging others on the team, I think that it is important to identify strengths and weaknesses of others and the team. As you can see, I have outlined what I believe makes a great and effective leader.
For a person to be a good leader he or she must be willing to listen to their team because the smallest of ideas or opinions could make a lot of difference. The team will therefore feel a sense of importance to their common cause and things will go well because they feel appreciated and useful.
