1.1Identify the different reasons why people communicate

Communication is defined by the exchange of information, which can transferred by speaking, writing or the use of other mediums. Communication with feedback is the most effective form of information transference, as the level of communication between two parties is more in sync.

The reason why we communicate, is to transfer information and gather a greater understanding through conversation, issues or particular areas of interest. The best level of communication is when an individual is able to competently respond to what the other individual is saying.

If an individual enters into a new residential placement and they cannot speak a word of English, the Admission Pack is a source of information that will have documentation relating to the individual place of birth or spoken language, meaning that the correct language interpreter can be used.

2.2 Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication

You have to identify the type of communication that has to be used, which will ensure that the communication is effective between two individuals. This could be through the ‘tone of voice’, which could determine how much the individual is willing to open up and disclose information, ‘pictorial communication’ could be used if the individual has learning difficulties and responds more effectively through pictures, or the use of an ‘interpreter’, which enables the individual to comfortably communicate using their mother tongue and express themselves in the most effective way.

2.3 Describe a range of methods to meet individuals needs

A range of methods that could be used to meet an individual’s needs, could be the use of body language towards the individual, eye contact with the individual and also the tone of your voice when communicating with the
