Farah Ahmedi, Ernesto Galarza, and Rikki Tikki Tavi were determined to achieve their goal, and they persevered, and came out triumphant. They wanted to achieve a goal because a kind of switch flips in your head that makes you want to achieve new things, or get out of a bad situation, or turn an okay situation into a good one. They got out of bad situations, like when Ahmedi and her mom escaped their war-torn city. Also when Rikki Tikki Tavi broke the stereotypes of being an average snake- killing mongoose, because he did more than that. Galarza overcame adversities and ultimately a language barrier. All these characters set goal, faced challenges, overcame adversities, and stereotypes, by using perseverance and determination.

To start off, the yearn to learn a new language aided Galarza when learning English. Mrs. Ryan never let her students forget why they were at Lincoln, “ for those who were alien, to become good Americans; for those who were so born, to accept the rest of us.” The students at Lincoln were encouraged to take on this journey by their acquaintances. Little did she know, sadly, the hardest part was yet to come, because the problem wasn’t even leaving Pakistan. An unexpected curve ball was thrown her way, in a freak accident, when Farah lost her leg to a land mine. This made things tremendously more difficult. She had to go to Germany to be properly fixed, and by the time she came back, her city was like a living combat. It wasn’t necessary for her family to leave before her incident, but months later it seemed it should have been mandatory.
