Change is inevitable in society, throughout the years, different ways, ideas, and concepts shaped the world we live in. Recently, new technologies emerged, changing many things in society. Social communication is now easier than ever before with the help of various social networking sites. These networking sites “are popular online communication forms among adolescents and emerging adults”. Social networking sites include Facebook, Myspace, Instagram and much more. These technologies and various platforms have enabled people to interact with each other more conveniently. They had ways to advertise such as the television, the newspaper, and billboards. In society today, companies and brands are becoming more successful than ever with the help of social networking sites. They are using online media to further grow themselves. Not only are bigger brands such as Apple and Coca-Cola growing in revenue because of these emerging technologies, regular people are also building a name for themselves on social media. With the rapid change of things “Today, ideologies of buying and selling are too deeply rooted online for that. With changes in the Internet's identity as a medium have come changes in users' conceptions of themselves” (Senft, 2013) where users are suddenly all aspiring entrepreneurs and business moguls. The internet has built a gateway into the world where anyone can become famous and as a result build themselves a following. An example of this is how Youtube has lead to many discoveries, including music talents, makeup gurus, and even gamers. One of the world’s biggest pop stars, Justin Bieber was discovered on Youtube (Lavaveshkul, 2012) and now he has his own brand and following. As for companies who want more recognition and effective advertising, they are turning to online advertising as well “The Internet is most fundamentally a distribution device. [which as a result is] dramatically reducing advertisers' support of traditional media” (Baker, 2007). Therefore, moving away from the traditional way of advertising and moving towards a more online-based society. This new way of branding oneself on social media seems to be working as a study showed that users from 35 countries showed that more than half of them are connected to brands, 42 percent had a conversation with a brand and 36 percent of them posted content about a brand or company on social media (Gao and Feng, 2016).
