However, in the coming years the use of sea transportation will certainly increase, this since the demand for new cars, coming from Asia and other overseas countries is increasing. It must be noted that as showed on figure 29, Asia and Africa have together only 8 assembly lines, whereof only one in Africa. Asia, remains the largest continent when it comes to surface area and population, followed by Africa second in population and third in surface area (Le monde, 2014). Taking these facts into consideration, one can easily understand that the limited number of assembly lines will force Nissan to increase the number of shipment to supply all markets. This can only be done by sea for financial and practical reasons. Of course, another possibility could be building new plants to shorten the transportation distances and make the supply chain less complex. According to (MarketLine, 2016) product recalls are one of the weaknesses of Nissan affecting the corporate’s image and reputation in addition to it supply chain. However, recalls are not only affecting Nissan but many other brands under which manufacturer targeting the upper market segment such as Lexus or BMW (ConsumerReports, 2015). Under this section the focus will be on the impact of product recalls on the transportation. Figure 32, gives an overview of the steps when a car is recalled by the manufacturer, the first step consists of making an announcement to recall in the market. This is followed by the physic retake of the car for repair, depending on the nature of the problem it can be solved at the dealer garage or must be returned to the production line. When the car is at the disposal of Nissan the problems are solved, most of the time free of charge for the customer. After repair, the car can eventually return to its
