A third and final key way that social media has changed our everyday lives is through online advertisements. This can have both positive and negative consequence faced by individuals that are coming across the advertisements. Social media advertising can be a great way for a new business to create a name for themselves and reach out to a large group of individuals. The advertisements that we are all aware of are those that pop up when one visits some websites, watches a video or that are placed on the side of a webpage as one scrolls through it. For instance, young people who have grown up with social media and are forced to face time without social media can experience Internet addiction affliction disorder (IAAD) according to O’Shaughnessy & Stadler (2013). This could occur when the devices in which they have access to the Internet with, get stolen, lost or break and results in suffering withdrawal symptoms. This shows how incredibly addicting social media can be and the way in which it can impact individuals in a very negative way. Even if social media does not contribute to a full on addiction, it is still a tool that distracts individuals from what they are supposed to be doing. This is not only related to the fact that social media distracts individuals from doing school work or from interacting with humans in real life conversations, but the distraction that it provides when individuals are driving. Many instances can occur while driving that may distract drivers. However, using a cellular device while driving is something that can be avoided, yet continues to be a reason many accidents occur and many people are injured or killed.
