Are Freemasons a satanic cult? Freemasons are members of a brotherhood society that promote the belief in God and brotherhood. "The terms Freemason and Mason are interchangeable, as are Freemasonry and Masonry. The word is thought to refer originally to "freestone mason," skilled craftsmen who carved freestone (a soft, easily carved stone).' (Morris, pg. 4) The major objective of Masonry is personal growth in self-control, spiritual development, and self-discovery in men. Masons are taught common courtesy, respect, and responsibility through rituals.Rituals signify initiation in the organization with symbolic tests, hand grips, historical lessons, and swearing an oath to God. The basic organization of Freemasonry began sometime in the early 1700s and late 1600s; from these early years the Freemasons fraternity grew worldwide. Masons are more common than one might think. According to the article 32 Degree Masons, "Masonry is practiced worldwide. There are over 2 million Masons in North America and nearly 5 million worldwide.". There are many religious concerns about Freemasonry. Masonry is a Christian built fraternity and does not worship Satan or Lucifer. No Masonic Devil, nor does a Masonic God exist. Masonry is not a cult, it does not participate in mind-control or force members to stay. Every Freemason is required to state that he believes in God to become a member. Members are encouraged to worship in their own way. The Masonic Information Center released a statement on Freemasonry and Religion stating that, "Masonic ceremonies include prayer; both traditional and extempore, to reaffirm each individual's dependence on God and to seek divine guidance."("Freemasonry and Religion").
