Millions of products in modern day history are being genetically modified by scientists, and companies altering the product in order to create a more desirable one. Genetically modified organisms, or “GMO” is typically regarding foods that have had their genes modified and changed in some type of way. The characteristics that can be changed range from color, size, shape, taste, life span, and even structure. Genetically modified organisms, or the engineering of foods have created a lot of controversy in the United States of America. For thousands of years the human race have been altering and changing living organisms. There are many experiments that have gone into the creation of this term, and scientist today are still pushing limits, and finding new ways to use biotechnology in the world. The first experiments of this process were in 1984, and in 1994 the United States was introduced to the sale of GMO foods in supermarkets, grocery stores, and restaurants. Plants and animals are between the top two biggest species that undergo modification. There are many opinions on this subject, steps that go into the process, and alternatives that can be used. The United States farmers and ranchers alliance state that some of the benefits include “Fewer inputs such as water and pesticides to grow, crops engineered to fight disease saving the food itself, industry, and production, and healthier seeds that eliminate trans fats ad contain increased levels of omega 3” (Fooddialogues). Countries lacking food supply, and nutrients, whose people are suffering from hunger can eat these enhanced nutritional foods to increase their chance of survival.
