GMO Myths And Truths

In every grocery store around the world, GMO’s can be found along the produce aisles and other agricultural sections. This is because we have been genetically modifying food for an extremely long time. Through genetic modifications we turned grass into corn and changed carrots to give us more nutrients. Multiple food producing companies, however, have been taking the science behind modifying organisms to the extreme, causing distrust among people everywhere. This is because they are unaware of what is in our food and how it is raised. Thanks to the lack of confidence, we have in GMO’s, genetically modified organisms tend to not sell well in markets and stores. Despite this popular way of thinking, GMO’s aren’t as bad as the majority of humanity …show more content…

This idea isn’t completely true, but it is possible if bio-technicians take it too far. Three people who saw this as a problem are Jon Fagan, Michael Antoniou, and Claire Robinson; The authors of “GMO Myths and Truths”. In their book, they explained how GMO’s were bad along with how they affect the world. In their opinion, GMO’s harm soil quality, do not offer effective solutions to climate change, and can cause serious problems for farmers. The main cause for this is the BT toxin, Bacillus Thuringiensis, which is put into plants in order to give them the ability to “naturally” kill harmful bugs like insecticide. In the authors research they show how this can potentially harm the environment and all living creatures. Some problems from GMO’s that could harm humans and animals involved disturbing the functions of the digestive track, weight gain/ loss, Problems with immune systems, and new toxins being created in BT crops. This by itself is enough to cause most people to find GMO’s destructive but, if humanity took GMO’s more seriously, there are ways we can truly use biotechnology to improve how we live. Problems only develop when gene modifications aren’t carefully watched over and …show more content…

According to the National Research foundation, if we are extra careful with how we modify these crops, we could find many ways to improve the environment without any negative changes falling upon us, meaning, we could fix the problems that the authors of “GMO’s Myths and Truths” had been trying to present. With no need to use pesticides on crops, the quality of soil will improve. They can also be modified to fight against certain diseases and blights with a greater chance at surviving. The ability to fight against these presented plant health problems will also allow us to live with less worry when it comes to the safety of the crop we could be eating. If more crops survive, we will be able to feed more people and the world in general could start heading in a good direction when it comes to world hunger. They don’t only fight their own illnesses, however. Some genetically modified plants, such as tomatoes, are modified to help us fight diseases as well and are modified to provide more nutrients. These are just a few of the many ways that GMO’s could change the future for the better, after all, it doesn’t stop at just crops. Research a shown that GMO’s can even affect the future of
