The story begins when Old Major, the oldest and wisest pig, gives a speech about in the near future, there will be a revolution against Mr. Jones and all the other humans and there will be a Republic of the Animals. After his speech, he teaches the animals the Beasts of England song. A couple nights later, when Old Major died, the animals began to plan their revolution. Then, after a few months of talking it over, the day finally came when they were underfed for days straight and Mr. Jones was drunk, that they couldn’t take it anymore, and revolted, which caused Mr. Jones and his men to flee. (Old Major, Napoleon) • Do not trust an authoritarian, because they will betray you. (Napoleon and Boxer) The quote “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” is the final change to the Seven Commandments by the pigs to fit their ideals for classes. Until this point, the pigs were being subtle about themselves being the higher class, but now they said, in a misleading sort of way, that the animals are actually not equal, and the pigs have now openly declared themselves higher than the other animals, though most of them are not intelligent enough to understand. In Animal Farm, Napoleon and the pigs serve as an example of totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is when one man or group completely control the masses. That group in Animal farm would be the pigs, with Napoleon as the leader. The masses would represent the rest of the animals. Totalitarianism relates to world history because there have been many totalitarian dictators throughout history. The main example which Orwell was trying to use is Josef Stalin, who was the dictator of Communist Russia. Others were Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hideki
