As the storm passed west of Cuba, its effects extended as far east as Havana, where winds reached 56 mph (90 km/h). Although not directly recorded, sustained winds of Category 3 intensity probably affected coastal Mississippi and Alabama, with Category 2 winds affecting Florida.[5] Throughout the affected region, telephone and telegraph infrastructure was blown down, crippling communications.[12]
This semester was filled with many bumpy roads. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with my writings , as I didn 't feel confident enough to write a well developed writing. I seemed to find myself struggling whereas writing was not my favorable subject. The major errors I had in my writings this semester would be , grammatical errors,work citations, transition words, formatting ,paragraph development, sentence structure , and sentence level issue. Therefore I have set goals to improve my writing in the future.
From my perspective, I firmly believe the need for strengthening my writing skills, including gathering ideas, adding power with rhetorical devices, and shortening the time needed to derive a well written essay. How can one write an excellent essay if one does not have any ideas to extend from? I’ve struggled with finding ideas, so I seek for a mentor’s help and more practices. AP English offers the solution to my situation. I would have frequent practices and other’s critique in order to strengthen my skills.
Writing an essay is not easy, at least for me. It takes time to develop a sophisticated piece of work that people will want to read more and more of. Ideas need to be written thoughtfully and sources need to be incorporated smoothly. Words need to have meanings to them, and sentences need to make sense. Now, I didn’t know how much I could learn in four months to make me a better reader and writer.
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I did not worry about preparing for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not enough for college courses. Writing is not just a skill that I will need for English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate with professors.
Before enrolling into the course of English 111, my writing was primarily based on specific boundaries. For example, I was told that essays needed to be five paragraphs long with five to eight sentences within each paragraph. After my enrollment into this course, I have learned that the stereotype for writing an essay was not as practical as I once had believed, and that the limitations and expectations that were once implemented into my writing were essentially not correct. This course has changed my writing by allowing me to expand into broader topics in papers, such as compare and contrast essays, subject by subject, and point by point papers and outlines. I have learned now to use stronger verbs within my essays, and to open my vocabulary
Exit Essay Before fall semester started my writing skill were not the best as my high school was not as strict in writing structure. The way I write has gotten sloppy and careless but I saw some improvement this fall semester In semester in English 1301, I have relearn grammar and sentence structure.
reflecting on my progress thus far in this course, I have not only become cognizant of my writing skills and habits, but improvements I need to make to become a better writer. Although writing has never been one of my strong suits, I have learned valuable writing skills and strategies that are applicable to both the professional and academic field. Transitioning from the way I have been taught to write as a high school student has been the most challenging and influential change I have witnessed in my writing. To elaborate, in high school, we were taught the basis for writing any essay regardless of the audience or topic was the rigid five-paragraph essay structure.
The Progression of Writing: English Self-Assessment As I reflect on writing an essay, there are many aspects that I have learned to appreciate and acknowledge over the course and that is being able to express myself, understanding ideas that various writers have proposed, and using different creative ways in talking to the reader. Because of these factors, I have learned to focus on my main interest while writing and that is the desire for the reader to understand me and even better having a chance to become more open-minded based on my perceptions on what I am writing about. I have always had a desire to be a good writer but there are many challenges that I am still undergoing to achieve this. One way that helps me to access this desire of writing is to understand one fundamental, what makes someone a good writer?
This was the very first essay that I wrote during the year, where I talked about my goals and personal experiences. This essay allowed me to not only introduce myself to the teacher, but also helped show my writing style that I would be writing similar to all year. One of the strengths of this essay was the structure and how personal it is. I shared that I could learn quickly,
I want my words to hold more power while taking up less room on the page, as I sometimes tend to digress. You also mentioned that AP essays tend to be on the shorter side, so I need to prepare for that. I want to be able to express complex ideas in a simpler manner, where my language is articulate but still straightforward, similar to Jon Krakauer's writing. As I mentioned earlier, I would also like to work on my time management skills, especially with in class writings. As far as reading, I want to understand how language can convey the author’s meaning based on word choice.
After a semester in “college,” I have learned how to write essays. Through English Composition I and Mrs. Buss most of the mistakes I have made have been vanquished. The many types of essays like: ad analysis, comparative analysis, narrative, and argumentative all have given me problems but each was a step towards perfection. The first grade I received on an essay was my worst which was the ad analysis essay.
Final Exam Essay During this spring semester of English Composition two it taught me how to expand my writing ability to the fullest. The class taught me how to write a paper in the humanities, social science, and natural science. Within each one of the disciplines it had a different format that continues to add on to my forever growing knowledge of English, and how the writing style differs between each other. To kick off the semester, our first paper was in the natural science discipline.
Writing essays and other types of posts has always been difficult for me. But, throughout this composition class, I have learned many interesting and new things about the different types of writing styles. When starting this class, I considered myself to be an average writer with run-of-the-mill vocabulary, ordinary sentence structure and typical finished products. This class has helped me greatly improve my writing skills in a variety of ways. I have learned multiple things by taking this class, such as new ways to approach writing and that there is much that I still need to learn about composition.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
