Greetings, faculty, families, friends, and the Class of 2016. I am glad that we have all made it here today. We can now finally and formally recognize the fruits of our many years of labor. We, the Class of 2016 are graduating today.
Our presence here is proof that we are ready to set off into the real world, to become adults. Now, some of you might be wondering: “How can a high school diploma show that I really am ready for the freedoms, responsibilities, and pressures that comes with adulthood?” I feel that it is not so much about the diploma as it is about our journey on the way to get it. Each of us here today have been through multiple experiences throughout our high school career. These experiences have shaped us to what we are today: high school graduates, ready to take on the world.
The education and high school experiences backs up what a high school diploma certifies: readiness for adulthood. Many of the courses taken has inherent utility and value in everyday life. For me, a memory came to mind of when I went to my first pep rally. I entered the auditorium, absorbed by the sounds and excitement, and impressed by the display our school was able to put together. However, what had struck me the most from the experience was when the seniors of that year began to chant “Freshmen suck!” So I, along with a couple hundred other freshmen, replied by chanting “Seniors suck!” While on the surface this proceeding was, on the surface, a harmless and fun tradition, it motivated me to prove them wrong, that we were at the least just as good as them. I made it a goal to prove them wrong. The way I was going to prove them wrong is to graduate from high school so I can make something out of myself.
