Homosexuality being taught in schools? That’s a topic you would have never heard 10 years ago
Society has gotten used to the established method of education in Canada. Educational professionals have always had the goal of helping to both maintain an effective method to teach students information pertaining to several subjects, (cite). During the elementary school stage/level Sometimes the emphasis has been on subjects such as reading, writing, counting or even memorizing the multiplication tables. The emphasis of curriculum has moved away from factual knowledge to conceptual understanding and to skills needed to locate and use knowledge for a variety of purposes. The aspect of educational life that is reflective of society is being asked to catch up with what is current, meaning educational experts have established a method of education that encourages students to acquire knowledge that will be beneficial in the real world and in further environments of study such as post secondary education and any environment that requires the basic elements taught to students in both elementary and secondary school. The objective of eliminating narrow minded education methods and expending student’s knowledge in regard to current events has always been prevalent amongst education experts who develop/alter the school curriculum. The school curriculum has continuously involved In hopes of furthering the education of each individual but also keeping them updated with new ideologies in the world and educational system and with that come the introduction of homosexuality in elementary schools. Sexual minorities can lay claim to homosexuality being in the school curriculum for many of the same reasons that we include Shakespeare, they speak to the human experience in all its variety. Individuals such as Kathleen Wynn have made the curriculum more explicit and not only more age appropriate but appropriate in regard to currency. It is often a complex, if not impossible, task to distinguish between material that can be excluded for appropriate reasons, such as students' ages, or because of violations of the separation between religion and the government and the impermissible elimination of material sought to be censored solely based on viewpoint. Finally, in a country where millions of individual preferences exist, it would be unworkable to give power to each parent regarding specific topics in public school curriculum, and would result in a narrow and mostly irrelevant knowledge base in schools. Significant harm can result from schools ignoring the existence of homosexuality, including harassment and hostility to gay students or students with homosexual family members. Such harms can result in alienation and attempted suicide. It is evident that the topic of homosexuality in public school curriculum must be navigated carefully. This does not necessarily mean each individual must accept homosexuality but rather they must accept that fact they we are living in a generation where there will be many changes and instead of fighting these changes it would be more practical and realistic to approach change in a different manner that does not deny that change is a significant part of life that will be presented in every
