A blank page. All writing begins on this void of this inevitable and even unnerving white sheet of possibilities. And yet with certain skills and previous knowledge, that once scary page can become so much more, and develop into something truly magical. Shakespeare didn’t simply stumbleupon Romeo and Juliet. It was his heart, his mind, his pen, and yes, his paper that when combined with his previous knowledge of the English language, could only then produce one of the greatest pieces of all time. While I am not going to compare myself to Shakespeare, because each individual’s writing is unique in its own right, (and I am also not delusional), I have learned a variety of important and life-changing skills that have sculpted my English knowledge throughout my time as an English 9/10 student. However, while I won’t compare my knowledge of the English language to Shakespeare, his writing does teach a variety of English-based skills that improve one’s understanding of the English language. Often seen in his work, such as Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses relatable emotions and predicaments as tactics to engage and hold readers’ attention. All of humanity knows what it is like to love or be loved whether it is derived from another person, object, or something else entirely. As an English student reading his work, I was able to see how Shakespeare was able to take advantage of this common feeling that all people can relate to, and create an entire engaging piece around the emotion.
