Nike must stop ignoring the labor code guidelines and must take responsibility for the welfare of workers in foreign factories that make its product. Nike’s responsibility is to put into effect a positive, systematic change in working conditions within the footwear, apparel and equipment industry. Even though Nike has a management team, it is also CEO Phillip Knight responsibility to make periodic, unannounced visits to ensure that the standards are met. Nike chose these factories in these locations and the labor law standards therefore Nike can void their contract if the labor code guidelines are not followed. I truly believe that Nike was aware of these unsafe, unhealthy working conditions, but they didn’t try to correct the issue until after the negative press release. Nike could have better anticipated and more effectively handled the sweatshop issue but because of the high sales and all the profits they made, but they chose to ignore it. Nike advertised with empowering images and messages, but they allowed their factory employees to suffer in dangerous and inhumane working conditions. They only did the bare minimum in the code of conduct to address the issue and probably wouldn’t have done anything about the harsh working conditions if the issues had not went publically. Nike should do more to solve the problems like performing more spot checks at each facility, require proper training for the facility managers and have an outlet that the employees to go to when they are treated wrong.
