how has the application of genetically modified food changed society?

Introduction:
Within this report it will consists of how the application of genetically modified food changed/changing society. I will be discussing the positives and negatives of genetically modified food and if it is better for society to have genetic modified food or society should stay with non-modified food.

Biological/Scientific background:
The science needed to understand this report is how scientists create GMO foods. This is possible by two main methods. The first involves a device called a ‘gene gun’. The DNA to be introduced into the plant cells is coated onto tiny particles of gold or tungsten. These particles are then physically shot onto plant cells and …show more content…

For instance, scientists have newly created genetically modified rice, also known as golden rice (because of its gold color). The golden rice has been increased with vitamin A, they have made the rice to accelerate the growth of the plant (photosynthesis). The rice tolerates herbicides, resists pests and the rice are larger in size. This will help country’s and societies who mainly consume rice and have a low budget. With the faster growth of the rice it will be cheap for the consumers and the have their intake of nutrients and micronutrients daily. It is argued that the biggest threat to society is lack of food in the future as to the fast-growing population and the only way to fix this problem in genetically modified food, because of its fast growth and nutrients. Since the huge genetically modified organism (GMO) revolution in 2011, 160 million hectares of biotech crops were grown—that's 10% of earth's arable land, and it was an 8% increase than the previous year. This means that food will be cheaper than the non-modified food, also with its longer shelf life the food can be transferred to country to country and help the needy. GMO foods can help farmers by the crops to grow faster using less land and providing more food for the population. Corn is subject to plant diseases, including fungi and bacteria. Scientists bioengineered corn to be resistant towards diseases, also scientists bioengineered the corn to be …show more content…

Critics believe that the application of GMO food is going to have many negative impacts. For instance, the application of GMO food is unpredictable and largely unknown. Many scientists are worried that the genetically altered foods, once consumed, may pass on their mutant genes to bacterium in the digestive system. How these new strains of bacteria will affect our digestive system are anyone’s guess. Many countries like Australia, japan and 2 dozen other countries have banned gmos because of the lack of knowledge they have on this subject and with the lack on this subject the GMO’s could be hiding a really bad effect to our body’s. this could affect the whole society with the application of gmo too foods. With the altered material on GMO foods they could contaminate existing seeds and passing on modified traits too non-target species. In Japan, a modified bacterium created a new amino acid not found in nature; it was used in protein drinks and before it was recalled it cause severe mental and metabolic damage to hundreds as well as several deaths. Scientists conducted tests to test the safty of GMO foods and the rats who ate genetically modified potatoes showed chronic wasting. The rats who are herbicide resistant soybeans gave birth to stunted sterile pups. If society ate GMO foods on the daily they could have servire
