Although I have always found both the arts and sciences interesting, I have always regarded science with great fascination. Science’s ability to define reality and improve quality of life is what has intrigued me about this “study of everything” ever since I was a child. At Howard University, I will be able to build a foundation of knowledge among people with unique and innovative ideas that will aid me in achieving my goals of making significant contributions in the scientific community through chemical research. 100 years ago, the idea of a human being landing on the moon would have been considered the work of science fiction, however, in 1969 NASA was able redefine the possible and the impossible when Neil Armstrong set foot in the moon. Throughout history, science has constantly shaped and defined what we conceive to be a part of our reality. By utilizing scientific research in the creation of modern technology we have been able to stretch the boundaries of what we as people are able to achieve. Science plays a major role in improving the quality of life of people around the world. A present day example of this is the use of genetically modified mosquitoes in order to combat the zika virus and other diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. If these efforts are successful it can mean a significant reduction in the amount of people who contract these harmful diseases. This is especially important in places where people may not be able to afford treatment if they were to contract one of these diseases. To be able to help so many people through scientific research is what I find compelling about the field of science. If I, as single person, am able to make a positive impact on the lives of so many people I find it hard not to take that
