If the service user is a referral from Social Services then we usually receive a detailed assessment of the individual’s needs from the assessment a Social Worker has carried out. However, I do not rely on this when carrying out my own assessments as it has proven in the past that Social Services’ information is not always up to date. NHS referrals come with very little information. We receive the initials of the patient, their address, NHS number, Broad care number, next of kin details and the package visit times. We never receive detailed information of their medical history and it is often uncomfortable having to ask for this information from the patient or their next of kin as they feel we should already have this on our records.

However, I do not think people consider how much the client can help the social worker. A social worker can learn a great deal from those who are receiving their help, the ones that bring forth their stories and experiences to share. I believe this to be more helpful than a textbook or a classroom.

In the reading, the author discusses throughout the chapter skills and techniques in the middle phase of working with a service user. Honesty is a value that is highly respected in the social work profession because it creates authenticity and trust in the therapeutic alliance. I agree with the statement completely, as I believe that being honest in regards to what one is feeling as a social worker allows the service user to be honest with how they are feeling as well. Further, it is explained that empathy is of vast importance when working with a service user in order to connect, help them uncover what they are feeling, and find specific approaches and techniques that would be beneficial to the service user. Although I agree that empathy is an important skill for a social worker to have when working with a service user, I feel that at times it can be an issue.
My understanding of Human Services is to help people who need additional help and guidence to move forward with their life. Sometimes people need help with external problems such as the loss of a job, the need for food or housing or for help getting out of a dangerous situation or mental and physical health crisis. The Human Services practitioner is a professional who acts as an agent to assist and or empower individulas, groups, families and communities to help them function more effectivly in all areas of life and improve living condition. Human Service professional will always advocate for their clients and will never give up on them and make sure to strive for the clients well being as long as the client want to change.
Building rapport may not as easy if we did not apply any values that are suitable or accepted by our clients. As social work professionals, we have a commitment to advocate for our clients. Because of our advocacy commitment, we also should be committed to social justice. Change cannot happen overnight; however, it also cannot happen if people are not willing to speak up about the things they are passionate about. Additionally, social workers must ensure that they are empowering their clients. As social workers, we should be committed to using a person first approach.
As human services majors, we are all helpers in some way. Whether we are teachers, social workers or aids. We all do something similar. We help others in some way to make their lives better. Three characteristics of effective helpers that I believe is most important are openness and willingness to change, sense of identity, authenticity and honesty and acceptance of one's power.
Firstly, I need to identify the causes and formation of the difficulty situation of my client. I should not involve my own personal emotions when analysing the situation. Next, clarification of the situation is essential. The clients should figure out themselves on how to face the situation. An effective counsellor listen more than talks, and what they do say gives the client a sense of being heard and understood.
