I came to Illinois State University in the Fall of 2016. I knew all the opportunities that Illinois State University offered to its students, but I was hesitant of where those opportunities would take me. Illinois State University has not only given me those opportunities but has showed what else I can do beyond those privileges. The skills that Illinois State have already taught me are something I will use for the next two years and beyond. The first group I was involved in was an a cappella group on campus called Secondary Dominance. I had always been involved in music in high school and the best thing for me to do is join some of music group to make some friends. Without a lot of expectations, I made the group. Many of the girls are mostly music majors, but there are still a few who are not, including me. It’s a nationwide organization focusing on Public Relations major students and help them network with other professionals, build up their portfolios, and can visit PR agencies in the area. I joined my freshman year and began writing for the General and Alumni Newsletter and the blog. Since I was given the chance to write, I was exposed to AP style earlier than most Public Relations majors at Illinois State University. Just this past summer, I also started writing for Odyssey at Illinois State University. Odyssey is a website full of creators (mostly college age) who can write about everything and anything. The purpose of Odyssey is to let your voice be heard. Once I started writing for Odyssey, I began to enjoy writing a lot more. This past October, I was offered the position by my Editor-In-Chief to be an editor for other Odyssey creators. This position has helped me improve my editing skills, as well as my knowledge about AP
